A story from his senior year at Iowa. Remember, this was before many of the weight-loss safety measures they have now. The team would usually do a bus trip to a couple of different B10 schools on the same weekend (Friday-Sunday matches). Most were one or 2 hours weigh-ins before match time. As soon as they were weighed-in, they would drink H2O and/or Gatorade to gain back about 5 lbs. Remember a gallon of water weighs about 8lbs. Gatorade weighs closer to 10lbs. Then would eat an energy-rich meal that would get them to within 10 lbs over their weigh-in weight. After their match, they would eat again. Now they would get on the bus anywhere from 15 to 20lbs over. They start the quick drop process again.

He kept the same type of routine with the High School kids he coached, but he would not let them get more than 5 or 6 lbs over. For a 2 day tournament, they had to be around 2 lbs from weigh-in weight and most would "float" that overnight.

During the off-season, he usually had the kids walking around at about 20lbs over their desired weight.
